A man may imagine things that are
false, but he can only understand things that are true." Isaac Newton
Seasons Greetings!
Ngozi Emmanuel says “courage is everywhere... I also chicken out
sometimes” I have also loved and admired her guts since she started out at
Unizik and now she's one young person who is doing more to promote the
philosophy of what I call Young people helping young people.
Dear friends, we
may choose to hold to the lies that trend because we believe there is an
absence of courage to speak out the truth but the fact is, while it is normal
to chicken out sometimes, it is cowardice to remain in that state and bemoan
your situation when you can draw strength from around you and launch out in the
heights of truth.
“et veritas Domini
Manet in aeternum” and the truth of the Lord remaineth forever. This is very instructive
because truth cannot be supplanted.
This simply means
that a man is God to his fellow man. It was Winston Churchill who once said
"We make a living by what we get but make a life by what we
give.” Again, the wrods of Albert Eistein is quite instructive
here “we live for the sake of other men"
I started a series this month called #31DaysThanks
#TheGratitudeChallenge and today is Day 22! Phew! How time flies! Our focus
today is on Personal Social Responsibility, developing the art of giving back!
Yes, Giving Back.
You see many of us complain bitterly about life's unfairness;
unemployment, hunger, poverty, insecurity, war and violence and the list goes
on. . . Rightly so we should be angry at these happenstances because they
impede us in enjoying the life "we deserve" to live. But, in the
midst of all these negativities, there abound a plethora of reasons for
thanksgiving. Now many may be quick to say "Ojisi ibiakwa ozo", but
its true.
You may not have
that dream job yet, but you are alive; you may not have that money yet, but
somehow, there is food on the table; you complain about insecurity all over the
place but yet you sleep and wake up each day with a feeling of safety, why
shouldn't you be thankful? Remember, “Some can eat but have no food; some
have food, but cannot eat. We have food and we can eat, glory be to you O God!”
Being thankful to
the Supreme Being, The Sustainer and Protector of the Universe for all His
manifold blessings is a trait not common with many people today. Now listen,
even the most unscrupulous, shrewd, greedy, and conniving businessman knows the
importance of giving back for to them, it legitimizes their wealth and opens
doors for more increase. Giving back which espouses our willingness to
reciprocate the goodness of the Heavens to us shouldn't be a seasonal affair,
especially at a time like this.
For successful
businesses and brands, the world over, engaging in Corporate Social
Responsibility, CSR, shows the value that such brand attaches to it's
environment, partners, stakeholders and clients. The Bill & Melinda Gates
Foundation, The Rotary Foundation, TY Danjuma, Dangote, Tony Elumelu etc. These
are people who continue to give their money to the advancement of humanity.
According to the Financial Times, “Corporate social responsibility
(CSR) is a business approach that contributes to sustainable development by
delivering economic, social and environmental benefits for all stakeholders.
CSR is a concept with many definitions and practices. The way it is understood
and implemented differs greatly for each company and country. Moreover, CSR is
a very broad concept that addresses many and various topics such as human
rights, corporate governance, health and safety, environmental effects, working
conditions and contribution to economic development. Whatever the definition
is, the purpose of CSR is to drive change towards sustainability.”
Yet, someone would
quickly add "Ojisi nwayo kwa, ndi a nine ji mbada ego", Ojisi, all
these people are wealthy people hence their ability to give back". Who
says giving back must involve money?
Okay fine! Fa
ncha ji mba ego, mana gi kwa kwanu? Gini ka inwere I nye uwa ? no
doubt they all have access to huge funds to do more, but, as individuals, we
can do even greater!
Be Socially
Responsible
You owe your
environment a duty, A Personal Social Responsibility PSR; to
contribute to its growth and development and sustainability. In all y years
in #Rotaract,
I was able to see a platform that enables me to give my Time, Talent,
Treasure and Thinking in the service of mankind. For you, it may or may not
be #Rotary, it
may be #Enactus, #Jaycees,
the numerous organizations and clubs that plead various social causes. Find
your platform and give back!
Arvind Devalia
says PSR is all about doing to others what you would like others do
to you. It is about recognizing how your behavior affects others, and
holding yourself accountable for your actions. For example, contrast someone
being well mannered with someone being rude. A socially responsible person
will endeavor to have a positive effect on others and enrich his
environment. He will strive to make a positive contribution, and will not
pollute the atmosphere, both physically and metaphorically.
Ideally a PSR aware
person will:
1. Always
endeavour to have a positive effect on others
2. Have a mind set
to contribute.
3. Refrain from causing negativity in his environment e.g. by throwing
litter on the ground, or by gossiping.
4. His social and economic activities will have a positive or neutral impact on the environment
In less than ten days, 2017 shall come to an end, ask yourself, as a tenant living on earth, how well have you paid your rent? You still have ample time to reciprocate God's plentitude and plenitude of graces and blessings by being a blessing to another person. Remember, no man is too poor as to give nor too rich as to receive.

In 2018, create
your Personal Social Responsibility plan. Encourage more people to do more,
become more, dream more and act more!
